Review: SQL – Sequels [Gem Records]

SQL has been synonymous with the Dutch scene for over ten years now since turning heads with his debut release ‘Distorted Reality’ which came out in 2009. Since then he built a career for himself releasing on labels such as Outpost, Elevate and Gem Records where he has returned to release his debut album ‘Sequels’

The album, a sophisticated and slick body of work, touches on many topics throughout – but a constant theme throughout is The Mind.  From opening track Melancholia – exploring recovery from mental break down to his deeply personal track Melancholia which is dedicated to his two friends who he lost to suicide – these body of work is both deeply personal, but equally accessible to an outside listener.

Other stand out tracks include the sweetly harmonious Antipode – which tickles the ears with lustiest of melodies.  Wildlands, with its low slug, predatory bass line which subtly creeps up your spine. And September rich with glitchy progressive sounds and atmospheric pads setting a sombre tone until this is uplifted with an infectious synth that drags the listener in further.

With a deep and immersive sound, SQL touches upon several different electronic genres with nods towards techno, deep and progressive house, yet still pushing a unique textured sound.  Totalling 10 tracks  this album marks the 50th release from Gem Recordings, and is both a landmark release for the label and SQL himself, who after so many years on the circuit has put together a thoroughly complete Album.

SQL Album Sequels is out now on Gem Records.
