Doctor Claims: Magic Mushrooms Are the Safest Drugs to Use

Good news, trippers, mushies apear to be the least unsafe drug you can take. The annual Global Drug Survey, which has almost 120 000 participants across 50 countries, is the largest of its kind and an invaluable source of up-to-date information on patterns amongst recreational, habitual and chronically addicted drug users.

It also reveals a great deal about the drugs themselves, in this instance surveying how many users required medical treatment after taking a certain drug, and drawing conclusions as to the drug’s safety based on those results.

Of the more than 12,000 people who reported taking psilocybin hallucinogenic mushrooms in 2016, just 0.2% of them said they needed emergency medical treatment – this rate is at least five times lower than that for MDMA, LSD and cocaine.

Magic mushrooms are one of the safest drugs in the world,” said Adam Winstock, a consultant doctor and founder of the Global Drug Survey.

On the other hand, one of the riskiest drugs was found to be synthetic cannabis. Over one in 30 of users sampled sought emergency medical treatment – the highest of any drug studied except crystal methamphetamine.

Synthetic cannabis, more commonly known as ‘spice’, is available over the counter.

These findings, like so many of the Global Drug Survey, indicate an urgent need for drug policy reform.
